Single camera techniques
Single camera production uses only one camera and various shots and angles are taken using only one camera if a scene cuts back and forth between two actors the director will first shoot all shots with one actor then run the scene from point b with a second actor. This camera method that is used by filmmakers in comedy and drama, by tv programs in sitcom and used a lot in corporate video production.
Multi-camera production uses more than one camera, generally in production to outer cameras will shoot close up shots or crosses of the two most active characters, while two central cameras would shoot a wider master shot. This way multiple shots would be caught in one take and is used a lot in shows that have a high output like soap operas. Also is vital part of live television like news programs, as shown below. The pros of using multi-camera production are it saves a lot of time when filming and editing, it also helps when tracking continuity issues.
Compared to single camera, multi camera productions can be more expensive for corporate video productions and with the lack of room they have means single camera is ideal. Multi camera will also mean big films an tv will have less than optimised lighting and it will be harder to incorporate lighting rigs and boom mics.
Single camera production has a lot of positive uses, which is why it is so popular. These include the practically of not being limited it space of the shot set up, also you don't need both actors on set, it also allows you to have more aesthetic control over lighting and sound, which will lead to a better product. Shots also don't need to be shot in sequence even in scenes with two characters this will allow shooting to be streamlined and help meet deadlines
The disadvantages of single camera production are repetition, this is because if you need multiple shots you need to repeat the scene to get a different angle. It will also make it harder on the actor as a back and forth conversation could be shot if one actor is filmed at a time, this can interrupt the flow of the scene and chemistry between actors and makes it less natural if they have to engage with an actor. Single camera will also lead to more time editing as there is a lot more shots with less angles than a multi camera production. It is also more time consuming to only shoot one angle at a time. Errors in continuity are more frequent in single camera as there is less changing of angles in multi camera production. The action can also be stop an start with the change in angles, this may make the scene appear more stunted.
